Milestones
Three to six months of essential costs is the range most money guides start from: time to handle a lost job or a big bill without borrowing. One income, irregular pay or people who rely on you are common reasons to aim higher. It is a rule of thumb, not advice for your situation.
How this works
Your target is your monthly essentials times the months of cover, worked in whole cents. Essentials are what you could not stop paying if your income stopped: housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments. Type one total, or itemise them and the total adds them up.
Progress is what you have saved as a share of the target, rounded down, so it shows 100% only once you are there. The time to target is what is still to save divided by your monthly saving, rounded up to a whole month, and the date counts from today. It assumes you save the same amount every month and leaves out interest.
Milestones mark one month and three months of essentials on the way to your target.
