How this works
Characters are what you see: an emoji, a flag or a letter with an accent counts as one, and so does a line break. Characters without spaces leave out spaces, tabs and line breaks. UTF-8 bytes is the size the text takes in a file or a database field.
Words are runs between spaces that hold a letter or a digit, so don't and well-known are one word each (Chinese, Japanese and Thai are split into words by the browser). Sentences end at . ! or ? and at a blank line, so Dr. Smith counts as a sentence break. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Reading time is at 200 words a minute and speaking time at 130.
Limits as of 2026; platforms change them. X post 280, Threads 500, Bluesky 300, Instagram caption 2,200 and bio 150, TikTok caption 4,000, LinkedIn post 3,000 and headline 220, YouTube title 100 and description 5,000, Facebook post 63,206. Google shows about 60 characters of a title and about 155 of a meta description; it really cuts by width, so treat both as a guide. X counts each link as 23 and some characters, such as emoji and Chinese, as 2, so a post close to the limit may come out a little different there.
SMS: a text message holds 160 characters when every character is in the GSM-7 set (plain Latin letters, digits and common signs; ^ { } [ ] ~ | \ and the euro sign count as 2). One character outside it, such as an emoji or a curly quote, switches the whole message to 70. Longer texts are split into parts of 153, or 67, and your phone joins them back together.
Top words leave out common words such as the, and and of unless you turn on Common words. Your text and the limit you pick are kept on this device so they are here next time; Clear all removes the text.
